Study and library rooms in Dubai, shelves that carry the weight

Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, built-in desks and cabinetry, panelled walls, acoustic treatment and lighting that lets you read for three hours without a headache.

The short answer

What a study or library project involves and what it costs

A study or library room in Dubai covers bespoke shelving and cabinetry, a built-in or freestanding desk, wall panelling, lighting design, power and data, and acoustic treatment where the room is used for calls. Expect AED 25,000 to 65,000 for a working home office and AED 65,000 to 220,000 for a full library room with floor-to-ceiling joinery and panelling. Shelving alone runs AED 1,600 to 4,200 per square metre of face. Abdulla Carpentry EST engineers the shelf spans for real book loads rather than for display.

Books are heavier than almost anything else people put on a shelf — roughly 25 to 35 kilograms per running metre of full shelf. A standard 18 millimetre shelf spanning a metre will visibly sag under that within a year, and the sag is permanent. It is the single most common fault in home libraries, and it is entirely a design problem.

We solve it with span and section. Shelves limited to about 800 millimetres between supports, or thicker shelves with a front lipping that acts as a beam, or a steel flat bar concealed in the shelf for long spans. It costs very little at the design stage and it is the difference between a library and a set of drooping planks.

The other thing that makes a study work is light. Reading and screen work need very different things: an even ambient level so the room is not a bright screen in a dark room, a directed task light at the desk that does not reflect off the monitor, and a wall-washing layer on the bookshelves that makes the spines readable and the wall look intentional.

What goes in

The elements of a study or library

A study is a joinery room. Almost the entire budget and the entire success of the room sit in what is built into the walls.

Shelving and library walls. Floor to ceiling, fixed or adjustable, open or with cupboard bases for the things that should not be on display. Engineered for book load, with a ladder or a set of library steps where the top shelves are genuinely high. See joinery.

Built-in desks. Sized to the work rather than to a standard: 700 to 750 millimetres high, at least 700 deep for a monitor at a comfortable distance, with cable management built in and a drawer pedestal or a cupboard within reach. A window position is worth planning around.

Cabinetry and files. Closed storage for files, equipment, printers and the accumulation that an open shelf makes visible. A printer in a ventilated pull-out is one of those details that people appreciate for years.

Wall panelling and finishes. Panelled walls, a fabric or acoustic finish behind the desk, and a considered paint colour — studies are one of the few rooms where a dark colour genuinely works, because the room is used with artificial light. See wall panelling.

Acoustics. If the room is used for calls, hard surfaces and a wall of glass make you sound bad regardless of the microphone. Books themselves absorb well; a fabric-wrapped panel, a soft floor covering and a solid core door with a seal finish the job.

Power, data and lighting. Hard-wired data rather than relying on wireless, sockets at desk height as well as at floor level, and a lighting scheme that separates ambient, task and shelf lighting on different circuits. See electrical services.

Detailing

Materials, spans and the things that show

Shelf material is decided by span and by finish. Sprayed lacquered MDF gives a seamless painted look and is stable, but needs a thicker section or a lipping over about 700 millimetres. Veneered board on a hardwood lipping is stiffer and warmer. Solid timber is the stiffest and the most expensive, and it moves slightly with humidity, so it is jointed to allow for that.

Adjustable or fixed is a real decision. Fixed shelves at planned heights look far better — a continuous line across a wall with no visible support system — and they are stronger. Adjustable shelves on a system strip are more flexible and always look a little more like furniture and a little less like architecture. We usually fix the shelves that read as the design and make one or two sections adjustable.

Backs matter more than expected. A shelving run without a back shows the wall behind it, including every patch and colour variation. A painted or veneered back panel lifts the whole thing, and it is also where shelf lighting is concealed.

And scribe everything. Dubai walls and ceilings are rarely straight, and a library wall is a long horizontal line running right alongside them. The joinery is made slightly oversize and scribed on site so that line reads as true even when the building is not.

How a study or library project runs

Measuring a study room in Dubai

1

Survey and brief

We measure the room, check walls and ceiling for square and level, and establish what the room is for — reading, working, calls, or a display library. The brief decides the shelf depths, the desk size and the acoustic treatment.

2

Design and engineering

Elevations with every shelf position, spans checked against load, desk ergonomics set out, and lighting and data positions fixed. Where a span has to be long, the concealed steel or the lipping section is designed now.

3

First fix and finishes

Power, data and lighting circuits altered and run, wall preparation and battening where panelling or heavy joinery will fix, then painting and flooring completed before installation.

4

Manufacture

Shelving, desk, cabinetry and panelling machined and sprayed or veneered in our workshop. Four to six weeks for a full library wall, finished flat before it is assembled.

5

Installation and setting out

Installed, levelled, scribed to the walls and ceiling and fixed into structure. Shelf lighting connected, desk cable management set up, doors and drawers adjusted, then touched in and cleaned.

Prices

Study and library costs in Dubai

Design, manufacture and install in Dubai. Shelving and cabinetry are measured by the square metre of visible face.

Item Unit Typical range
Home office, complete per room AED 25,000 – 65,000
Full library room with panelling per room AED 65,000 – 220,000
Open shelving, lacquered finish per sq m face AED 1,600 – 3,200
Open shelving, veneered per sq m face AED 2,200 – 4,200
Shelving with cupboard bases per sq m face AED 2,400 – 5,000
Concealed steel for long spans per linear m AED 280 – 650
Built-in desk with pedestal each AED 4,500 – 16,000
Library ladder with rail each AED 3,500 – 14,000
Wall panelling per sq m AED 450 – 1,100
Acoustic fabric panels per sq m AED 350 – 900
Shelf and display lighting per linear m AED 160 – 420
Data points, hard wired each AED 280 – 650
Solid core door with acoustic seals each AED 1,800 – 4,500

A library wall is priced by visible face area, so height is nearly free — building to the ceiling rather than to two metres adds capacity and presence for a small proportion of the total.

Working from home

Making a study you can actually work in

Screen position decides comfort. The monitor should sit at arm’s length with the top of the screen at eye level, and it should not have a window directly behind it or directly in front of it — the first silhouettes you on calls, the second reflects onto the screen. In a Dubai villa with strong daylight, that positioning matters more than in most climates.

Lighting for calls is a separate problem from lighting for reading. A soft, even light in front of you at face height makes an enormous difference on video, and it is achieved with a wall-washing fitting or a lamp rather than with the downlight above your head, which produces exactly the shadows you do not want.

And the door. A study without a door that closes is a corner of a house, not a study. A solid core leaf with a drop seal and a properly packed frame gives a room you can take a call in while family life carries on outside. See door services.

Questions

Study and library: common questions

How much does a home library cost in Dubai?

AED 65,000 to 220,000 for a full library room with floor-to-ceiling joinery and panelling. A single library wall runs AED 1,600 to 4,200 per square metre of face, so a 4 by 3 metre wall is roughly AED 19,000 to 50,000.

Why do bookshelves sag?

Because books are heavy — 25 to 35 kilograms per running metre — and a standard 18 millimetre shelf spanning a metre cannot carry that. The fix is shorter spans, a thicker shelf with a front lipping, or a concealed steel flat bar. It is a design decision, and it is permanent once wrong.

How deep should bookshelves be?

Two hundred and fifty to 300 millimetres handles most books. Three hundred and fifty gives room for larger art and reference volumes, and deeper than that wastes floor space and makes the shelf look heavy. Mixed depths across a wall are perfectly workable.

How long does a study or library take?

Four to six weeks of manufacture for a library wall and desk, with one to two weeks of site work before installation and a few days of fitting. Six to eight weeks end to end.

Can you build around an existing window or radiator?

Yes, and that is normally the point of bespoke joinery. Shelving is designed around windows, service risers, air conditioning grilles and awkward returns, using the space that freestanding furniture simply cannot.

Can the room be soundproofed for calls?

Substantially improved, yes. Books absorb well on their own; adding fabric-wrapped acoustic panels, a soft floor covering and a solid core door with seals makes a real difference. Full acoustic isolation is a construction exercise involving the partition and the ceiling.

Do you build a library ladder?

Yes, on a brass or steel rail, or a freestanding set of library steps. A ladder is worth it where the top shelves are above about 2.2 metres and are genuinely used rather than decorative.

Can a study double as a guest room?

Yes. A built-in wall bed with the joinery designed around it gives a proper study that becomes a bedroom in a minute. It costs more than a sofa bed and works considerably better as both.
