LANDSCAPING AND GARDEN DESIGN IN DUBAI – VILLAS, TOWNHOUSES AND COMMERCIAL OUTDOOR SPACES
Paving, decking, pergolas, pools, planting, irrigation and lighting — drawn, approved, built and planted by Abdulla Carpentry EST. One contractor for the whole garden, since 1984.
Landscaping works in Dubai cover everything outside the walls: levels and drainage, paving and decking, boundary and retaining walls, pergolas and seating, lawns and planting, irrigation, lighting, pools and water features. A proper job starts with a measured survey and a drainage plan, not a plant list — because in this climate a garden fails from standing water, salt and sun long before it fails from design. Abdulla Carpentry EST builds all of it from one workshop in Ras Al Khor.
LANDSCAPING COMPANY DUBAI
Landscaping works in Dubai have been part of what we do for four decades. We are a landscaping company Dubai homeowners use when the garden needs building, not just planting. Most landscape contractors Dubai villa owners meet are either a nursery that also lays turf or a civil crew that also plants trees. A real garden needs both, plus joinery for the pergola, metalwork for the gates and screens, and an electrician for the lighting — all of which we hold in-house.
People search for landscapers near me and get a man with a van. Landscaping services Dubai communities actually approve need drawings, a developer NOC and a crew that can keep a gated street clean for six weeks. We work to that standard because the same company has to come back and hand the villa over.
1984Building in DubaiGARDEN DESIGN AND 3D LANDSCAPE DESIGN
All landscaping works in Dubai should start on paper. Garden design Dubai projects begin with a measured survey: plot boundaries, levels, the position of every drain, riser and AC condenser, where the sun lands in summer and where it lands in January. Landscape design then works outward from how you actually use the space — a lawn the children can use, a shaded seat for the eight months it is too hot at noon, a route from the kitchen to the barbecue that does not cross the lawn.
3D landscape design turns that plan into views you can judge before anything is dug. For a backyard design or a full garden makeover we model the paving, the pergola, the planting at maturity and the lighting at night, because a garden that looks right at 3pm and dark at 8pm has been designed only half the time. Our 3D design and consultation service covers this stage.
HARDSCAPING – PAVING, DECKING AND BOUNDARY WALLS
Hardscaping is what landscaping works in Dubai stand on, and it is where money is wasted most often. We lay interlock paving on a compacted base with proper falls, porcelain outdoor tiles on a bedded screed, natural stone paving, stamped concrete and gravel or pebble areas with a membrane underneath so weeds do not come through in six months. Soft landscaping is planned around it, not squeezed in afterwards.
Decking takes the same discipline. A wooden deck in hardwood looks superb and needs oiling; composite decking and WPC decking hold colour and need almost nothing, which is why most pool deck work in Dubai now goes that way. Boundary walls, garden walls, fences and gates are built and finished by us, and privacy screens in steel or aluminium come from our own metal works shop.

PERGOLAS, GAZEBOS AND OUTDOOR SEATING
Shade is the single most useful outcome of landscaping works in Dubai. A pergola Dubai gardens actually use is a structure, not a decoration: it has to take wind load, carry its own lighting and fans, and be fixed to something that will hold. We build a wooden pergola in treated hardwood, an aluminium pergola powder-coated to any RAL, and a louvred pergola — manual or motorised — where you want to open the roof in winter and close it in a shamal. A gazebo, sun shade or sail shade suits a corner where a full structure would crowd the plot.
Underneath goes the part people remember: an outdoor seating area or outdoor majlis with built-in benches, a fire pit, and an outdoor sofa area sized to real furniture rather than a drawing. Benches are built in our joinery shop, upholstered in outdoor-grade fabric, and set at a height that works with the table you already own.

ARTIFICIAL GRASS AND NATURAL LAWNS
Lawns are where landscaping works in Dubai are judged. Artificial grass Dubai villa owners buy twice is the one laid straight onto sand. Synthetic turf needs a compacted sub-base, a drainage layer, a weed membrane and joints seamed and sanded properly, or it ripples within a year. Done correctly, artificial grass installation gives a level, green, usable surface through August. Artificial grass cost per sq ft varies mainly with pile height and backing quality, and our published range is AED 90 to 220 per square metre supplied and laid.
Natural grass still beats it underfoot. Lawn installation here means importing topsoil, grading to falls, laying turf on a prepared bed and committing to irrigation and lawn maintenance from day one. We will tell you honestly which suits the plot: a shaded side garden will not hold natural grass, and a family that wants a cricket strip will not be happy with synthetic.

SWIMMING POOLS AND WATER FEATURES
Swimming pool construction is the part of landscaping works in Dubai with the least margin for error. Pool design starts with the hole, the rebar and the shell, not the tile. We build full-size pools and plunge pools, handle pool tiling in mosaic or porcelain, and treat pool waterproofing as a separate specified stage rather than something folded into the render — the same discipline we apply on our waterproofing jobs. Pool renovation on an existing pool usually means stripping back to find what the last contractor skipped.
Smaller water does more than people expect. A water feature, fountain, pond or waterfall wall cools a seating area by moving air and covers road noise, and it costs a fraction of a pool. The one rule is that the tank, the liner and the overflow are built properly: a leaking feature undermines whatever paving sits next to it.

OUTDOOR KITCHENS AND BBQ AREAS
An outdoor kitchen is the part of landscaping works in Dubai that gets used all winter, and it needs more than a counter. We build the blockwork, run the water, waste, gas and power, and finish in porcelain, sintered stone or tiled concrete — materials that take sun and a hose. A built-in BBQ is set into the run with proper clearances and a non-combustible lining, not dropped into a timber carcass.
Around it goes an outdoor counter with storage, a sink, a fridge housing and, increasingly, a pizza oven on its own slab because of the weight. Doors and drawers are in marine-grade stainless or powder-coated aluminium; standard kitchen carcasses do not survive a Dubai summer outdoors, whatever the supplier says.
PLANTING, TREES AND IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
In landscaping works in Dubai, planting is chosen for the position, not the photograph. Palm trees give height and shade without drinking what a lawn drinks; shade trees cool a seating area within a few seasons; hedges and privacy screens green a boundary wall faster than anything built. Flower beds, planters, a vertical garden or a green wall add colour where there is no soil depth, provided the irrigation reaches them.
An irrigation system is not optional here. We install drip irrigation to beds and planters, automatic sprinklers to lawns, and an irrigation timer zoned so the lawn, the beds and the pots each get what they need. A correctly zoned system uses markedly less water than a hose and keeps planting alive through the two weeks in August when nobody is in the country.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING
Outdoor lighting is what turns landscaping works in Dubai from a daytime asset into an evening room, and it is the cheapest item on this page per unit of use. Garden lighting works in layers: pathway lights at low level for safety, wall lights for the boundary, uplights into the palms, and discreet step and deck lights so nobody is lit in the face. Pool lighting is set during construction, not retrofitted.
We run LED landscape lighting on low voltage wherever we can, in IP-rated fittings with the drivers housed in an accessible enclosure rather than buried in a flower bed. Circuits are zoned so the path, the feature planting and the seating area can be switched separately; one switch for the whole garden always ends up with everything on or nothing on.
BACKYARD AND FRONT GARDEN RENOVATION
Most landscaping works in Dubai are not a bare plot. A backyard renovation usually begins with garden drainage and grading that were never right, soil preparation on ground that has been compacted by years of traffic, and tree removal where something was planted too close to a wall. Only once levels and water are sorted does new paving or planting make any sense.
Front gardens have their own problems: parking, a route to the door that works in the rain, and a design the community will approve. We also build a kids play area, a trampoline pit set flush into the lawn, a pet-friendly garden with planting that is safe to chew, or a low-maintenance garden for owners who travel. Landscape maintenance and a garden maintenance contract can be arranged — please confirm the current scope with our office.

WHO HAS TO APPROVE YOUR GARDEN
In a gated Dubai community the developer signs off before the municipality sees anything, and a pergola or pool can be refused on a detail. These are the bodies whose rules we build to.
COMMERCIAL AND COMMUNITY LANDSCAPING
Commercial landscaping runs on different constraints: access hours, public safety, and a programme that cannot shut a building. We landscape office forecourts, retail entrances, restaurant terraces, clinic courtyards and shared areas in residential communities, working out of hours where the site demands it and keeping a clean, barriered compound throughout.
Community and common-area work also carries a maintenance obligation from day one, so specification matters more than appearance: paving that takes a trolley, planting that survives a missed irrigation cycle, lighting with lamps that can be changed from a ladder rather than a cherry picker. We price landscaping works in Dubai for that whole life, not just the handover photograph.
LANDSCAPING COST IN DUBAI
Landscaping cost per sq ft Dubai figures are close to meaningless on their own, because a square metre of lawn and a square metre of porcelain terrace differ by a factor of five. Pergola cost is driven by span, roof type and whether it is motorised; artificial grass cost by pile and backing; pool cost by size, depth and finish; garden design cost by how many views you want modelled. The table below separates them.
We work across Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Damac Hills, Mudon, Springs, Meadows, Jumeirah Park, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Al Furjan, Mirdif, Palm Jumeirah and Jumeirah. Gardens in those communities need a developer NOC, and sometimes a Dubai Municipality permit, before anything is dug — we prepare and submit that pack. We can also show you before and after landscaping sets from comparable plots so the figures have something behind them.

LANDSCAPING WORKS IN DUBAI: 12 BEST EXPERT ANSWERS
How much does landscaping cost per sq ft in Dubai?
Per square foot is the wrong unit, because a garden is layers of different work. Our published ranges per square metre are AED 45 to 110 for natural turf, 90 to 220 for artificial grass, 160 to 420 for paving and 350 to 900 for decking, with planting at 90 to 280 and irrigation at 45 to 120. A typical townhouse backyard combining several of those lands in the low tens of thousands; a full villa garden with a pergola and pool runs well past it.
How much does a pergola cost in Dubai?
Our published range is AED 1,400 to 3,200 per square metre for a timber or aluminium pergola with a fixed roof, and AED 2,600 to 4,500 per square metre for a motorised louvred roof. A four-by-four-metre fixed pergola therefore sits around AED 22,000 to 51,000, and the same footprint with a motorised louvred roof roughly doubles. Lighting, fans and a slab underneath are priced separately.
Do I need developer approval to landscape my villa garden in Dubai?
In a gated community, almost always. Emaar, Nakheel, DAMAC and the other master developers require an NOC before work starts, and that applies to pergolas, paving, pools, boundary changes and sometimes even planting near a wall. Structures above the community threshold also need a Dubai Municipality permit. We prepare and submit the drawing pack; the authority and developer fees are passed on at cost.
Artificial grass or natural grass — which is better for Dubai?
Artificial wins on reliability, natural wins on feel. UV-stable synthetic turf stays green through August with no water and almost no upkeep, which suits a shaded side garden, a rented villa or an owner who travels. Natural turf is cooler underfoot and better for children and dogs, but it needs irrigation, feeding and cutting all year and will thin badly in deep shade. We will tell you which your plot can actually sustain.
How long does a villa garden take to build?
A small backyard with paving, turf and lighting is usually two to three weeks on site. A full villa garden with a pergola, planting and irrigation runs four to eight weeks. A pool adds several weeks of its own for excavation, shell, curing, waterproofing and tiling. The real variable is approval: a developer NOC can come back in days or take a month, and nothing can be dug until it does.
Do you build swimming pools yourselves?
Yes, from excavation through shell, waterproofing, tiling and plant room to the surround and decking. The stage that matters is the one nobody sees: we treat pool waterproofing as a specified system with its own inspection rather than something folded into the render. If you are renovating an existing pool, expect the first week to be finding out what the previous contractor left out.
Can you fix drainage and levels in an existing garden?
That is most of our renovation work. Water pooling against a villa wall, a lawn that will not drain, paving laid without falls and soil compacted to the point that nothing roots — all of it is fixable, and all of it has to be fixed before new planting or paving goes down. Our published range for drainage runs excavated and laid is AED 180 to 450 per linear metre.
What survives a Dubai summer and what does not?
Palms, bougainvillea, ficus hedging, date and frangipani trees and most Mediterranean shrubs do well with irrigation. Fine lawns, hydrangeas and anything that wants cool nights do not, whatever the nursery says. On the hard side: porcelain, natural stone, composite decking, powder-coated aluminium and marine-grade stainless last; untreated softwood, mild steel and cheap vinyl do not see a second summer.
Do you do outdoor kitchens and BBQ areas?
Yes, including the blockwork, the water, waste, gas and power runs, and the finish in porcelain, sintered stone or tile. Our published range for an outdoor kitchen built and fitted is AED 3,500 to 9,500 per linear metre, and a built-in seating or majlis bench runs AED 900 to 2,400 per linear metre. Doors and drawers are specified in marine-grade stainless or powder-coated aluminium.
Do you offer garden maintenance after the build?
Landscape maintenance and a garden maintenance contract can be arranged — please confirm the current scope and intervals with our office before relying on it. What we always provide at handover is a written care sheet: irrigation zone settings, what each plant needs, when to feed the lawn and which fittings take which lamp.
Can you landscape a rooftop, terrace or balcony?
Yes, with two conditions. The waterproofing underneath has to be sound or renewed first, because planting over a failing membrane guarantees a leak into the room below. And the loading has to be checked: wet soil is heavy, and large planters on an apartment terrace need positioning over structure, not mid-span. Lightweight substrates and self-watering planters solve most of it.
Do you work outside villa projects?
Yes. We landscape office forecourts, retail entrances, restaurant terraces, clinic courtyards and shared areas in residential communities, and we work out of hours where a site cannot close. Commercial landscaping works in Dubai are specified for maintenance from day one, so paving, planting and lighting are chosen for what they cost to keep, not just to install.
