Children’s rooms in Dubai, built to be rebuilt

Bespoke bunk and cabin beds, wardrobes that grow with the child, study desks, play storage and finishes chosen for safety and cleaning — designed so the room can change as the child does without starting again.

The short answer

What a children’s room project involves and what it costs

A children’s room fit-out in Dubai covers bespoke beds — bunk, cabin, loft or single — fitted wardrobes, a study desk, toy and book storage, safe finishes, lighting and often wall panelling or a feature wall. Expect AED 18,000 to 45,000 for a complete room and AED 6,500 to 22,000 for a bespoke bunk or cabin bed with integrated storage. Abdulla Carpentry EST builds children’s furniture to the same structural standard as adult joinery, with low-VOC finishes and every edge rounded.

Children’s rooms have a design problem nothing else in the house has: the occupant changes completely every few years. A room built around a toddler is wrong for a seven-year-old and absurd for a thirteen-year-old, and a room full of themed built-in furniture becomes an expensive problem long before the child leaves it.

So we design in layers. The structural joinery — wardrobes, bed frames, desk and storage — is built neutral, robust and adaptable, sized so a bunk becomes two singles or a cabin bed becomes a desk-under-bed arrangement. The character comes from paint, panelling, textiles and things on the wall, all of which can be changed in a weekend.

Then there is safety, which in a children’s room is not a formality. Every tall unit anchored to the wall. No sharp corners at head height. Bunk guard rails at the correct height and ladder treads deep enough for a small foot. Soft-close on everything, so fingers are not caught. Low-VOC paints and finishes, cured before the room is occupied. None of it costs much and all of it matters.

What goes in

The elements of a children’s room

Floor space is the scarce resource in a children’s room. Nearly every good decision is one that gives some back.

Bunk, cabin and loft beds. The single most effective use of a small room. A bunk sleeps two in the footprint of one. A cabin bed puts drawers underneath. A loft bed puts a desk or a play space under the sleeping platform and can free up two square metres of floor.

Wardrobes that grow. Built full height with adjustable internals: more shelving and low hanging for a small child, more hanging and drawers as they get older. Rails set at a height a child can reach, with the top section for adult access and seasonal storage.

Study desks. A proper desk from around age six, at the right height, with good task lighting and a chair that fits. Built in under a window or as part of the wardrobe run, so it takes no additional floor area.

Toy and book storage. Low, open and easy — a child tidies into a box, not onto a shelf at shoulder height. Drawers under beds, low cube storage, and book display where the covers face out so young children can actually choose.

Finishes and safety. Low-VOC paints, wipeable surfaces at hand height, rounded edges and radiused corners, soft-close hardware throughout, anti-tip anchors on everything tall, and blind cords either cordless or properly secured.

Lighting and blackout. A dimmable ambient light, a bedside or reading light the child controls, a night light, and blackout that genuinely works — in Dubai, summer sunrise is before six and a child will wake with it.

Ages

Designing a room that lasts more than three years

A nursery needs a cot, a changing surface, a feeding chair and somewhere quiet and dark. Almost none of that is needed two years later. So we build the wardrobe and the storage as permanent joinery and treat the cot and changing table as temporary, with the changing surface designed as a chest of drawers that simply loses its topper.

From about four to ten, the room is dominated by play and by things on the floor. Low accessible storage, a clear floor area, and a bed that contributes storage underneath. This is the age where a bunk or cabin bed earns its cost, and where wipeable surfaces at hand height save the paintwork.

From eleven upwards the room becomes a bedroom and a study, and the requirements invert: a proper desk, better task lighting, more hanging space than shelving, somewhere to sit that is not the bed, and privacy. If the wardrobe internals were made adjustable and the desk was built in, that transition costs a coat of paint rather than a new room.

Two children sharing complicates it usefully. A bunk with individual lights, sockets and a shelf for each child, storage divided clearly, and — where the room allows — a low divider or a pair of cabin beds back to back that gives each one somewhere that is theirs.

How a children’s room project runs

Measuring a children bedroom in Dubai

1

Survey and brief

We measure the room and talk through the ages of the children, whether they share, how long you expect to stay in the property, and what has to be stored. Children’s rooms are the ones where the brief changes the design most.

2

Design and safety review

Layout and joinery elevations with bed heights, guard rails, ladder geometry and reach heights checked, plus anchor positions and socket locations. Presented in 3D so the child can see it too, which is more useful than it sounds.

Preparing a children room for new furniture

3

First fix and finishes

Sockets and lighting circuits altered — bedside switching, reading lights, desk power — then wall preparation, low-VOC painting and flooring, all completed and cured before anything is installed.

Manufacturing children bedroom furniture in Dubai

4

Manufacture

Beds, wardrobes, desk and storage machined and finished in our workshop in low-VOC lacquers, with every exposed edge radiused and soft-close hardware throughout. Three to five weeks.

5

Installation and safety check

Installed, scribed, and every tall unit mechanically anchored into structure. Guard rails, ladder fixings and drawer stops checked, hardware adjusted, and the room cleaned and aired before the child moves back in.

Safety

The details we do not treat as optional

Furniture tipping is the most serious and most preventable hazard in a child’s room. Every tall unit we install is mechanically anchored into structure, not into plasterboard alone, and where the wall is a gypsum partition we install a noggin or a plywood backing at the fixing height before the wall is closed. We will also anchor furniture you already own while we are there.

Bunk beds have specific geometry that exists for a reason: guard rails of adequate height on the upper bunk with gaps that a child cannot pass through, a ladder with deep enough treads fixed rather than hooked on, and enough clearance between the upper mattress and the ceiling. We build to those dimensions rather than to a drawing that looks right.

Finishes and air quality matter in a room where a child sleeps for ten hours a night. Low-VOC lacquers and paints, fully cured and the room aired before it is occupied, and no unsealed composite board. We also fit soft-close on every door and drawer so fingers cannot be caught, and we round every edge within reach.

Questions

Children’s room: common questions

How much does a children’s room cost in Dubai?

AED 18,000 to 45,000 for a complete room with a bespoke bed, fitted wardrobe, desk and storage. A shared room for two children runs AED 28,000 to 65,000. A bunk bed on its own is AED 6,500 to 18,000.

How long does it take?

Three to five weeks of manufacture with about a week of site preparation before and a few days of installation after. Five to seven weeks end to end, and we schedule the painting so the room is fully cured and aired before the child moves back in.

Is a bespoke bunk bed worth it over a retail one?

If the room is awkward, if you want storage integrated, or if the bed needs to convert later, yes. A bespoke bed is sized to the room, jointed rather than bolted, anchored to the wall and built with storage underneath that a retail bed cannot offer.

At what age can a child use the top bunk?

Most guidance puts it at six years and above, because of the fall risk and the need to use a ladder safely at night. We build guard rails and ladders to safe dimensions regardless, but the age judgement is yours.

Will the room still work when they are older?

That is what we design for. Wardrobe internals adjustable, desk built in, bed frames made so a bunk separates into two singles, and the character delivered by paint and textiles rather than by built-in themes. The transition should cost a coat of paint.

What finishes are safe for a child’s room?

Low-VOC water-based lacquers and paints, fully cured before occupation, with all composite board edges sealed. Wipeable surfaces at hand height, rounded edges within reach and soft-close hardware throughout.

Can you make storage that a child will actually use?

Low and open is the rule. Children tidy into boxes and drawers at their own height, not onto shelves above it. Front-facing book display, labelled boxes and deep drawers under the bed do far more for a tidy room than tall shelving.

Do you anchor the furniture to the wall?

Always, into structure rather than into board alone. Where the wall is a gypsum partition, we install backing at the fixing height first. We will also anchor existing furniture in the room while we are there, at a small cost.
